The Top 17 Ways to Use Your LATAM Pass Miles [2024]

When you add up all of its branches, LATAM is the biggest airline company in Latin America. And even though it has roots in the early 1900s, the joint holding company wasn’t officially formed until 2012, when LAN bought TAM Airlines.

This company has six regional branches, with its main office in Santiago, Chile. These are LATAM Brasil, LATAM Colombia, LATAM Ecuador, LATAM Express, LATAM Paraguay, and LATAM Peru.

As a member of Oneworld from 2000 to 2020, this full-service airline provides much-needed links between many regions and countries around the world.

The Pros and Cons of LATAM Pass Miles

Here are the biggest benefits of LATAM Pass miles:

  • Open-jaws are allowed on redemption bookings
  • Stopovers are allowed on all redemption bookings as long as none of the itinerary’s segments are operated by Iberia
  • LATAM Pass miles expire after 3 calendar years and can be extended
  • LATAM Pass does not pass on fuel surcharges for the most part

LATAM Pass miles are good for 3 years, but they can be extended.
Most of the time, LATAM Pass doesn’t charge extra for fuel.

  • These are the worst things about LATAM Pass miles:
  • Prices for LATAM flights are way too high.
  • The only card that can be used to move points is the LATAM Pass.
  • To get more LATAM Pass miles, you must fly on a LATAM-operated flight and earn at least one mile there.
  • When you make an appointment over the phone, there are fees.
  • There are big fees for canceling and changing plans.

How to Use Your LATAM Pass Miles

LATAM has two different pricing strategies for award flights. One strategy is used for flights run by LATAM and the other is used for flights operated by partner airlines.

Both of these designs can be annoying and/or wrong, as you’ll see below.

Award Lists for LATAM

LATAM doesn’t post an award chart for its flights, which is inconvenient, and the prices for awards on LATAM flights are also very bad.

One crazy example is a nonstop trip in LATAM business class from Los Angeles (LAX) to Santiago (SCL) that you can book with 95,000 Delta SkyMiles. It costs 283,700 LATAM Pass miles. That won’t work for us.

Unfortunately, you can’t find out how much your award ticket will cost unless you search for it. This is true even if you want to use your LATAM Pass miles to book flights run by LATAM. If you do that, the price you see will probably shock you (in a bad way).

Award Charts for Airline Partners

The award prices for partner-operated flights shouldn’t be as high as the award prices for LATAM-operated flights in general. It’s very hard to find LATAM’s partner award chart on LATAM’s U.S. website, which is one of the most annoying things about LATAM Pass.

The Top 17 Ways to Use Your LATAM Pass Miles [2024]

When you look for partner award tickets, you should be able to find consistent prices once you find a good chart.

The LATAM partner award chart is based on regions and looks like this:

Along with LATAM, you can use your LATAM Pass miles to book flights on the following partner airlines:

  • Alaska Air Group
  • The Austrian Airlines
  • The British Airways
  • The Cathay Pacific
  • Delta Flights
  • Finnish Air
  • Spain and Portugal
  • Airlines in Japan
  • Air France Lufthansa
  • Flights from Malaysia
  • Qantas Air
  • Delta Air Lines
  • The king of Jordan
  • STATE SWISS
  • First Air S7

Awards Bookable Online vs. Phone

The online award search for LATAM Pass doesn’t always show flights on all airlines. You should be able to book Delta, Qantas, and Qatar Airways trips online, but it will be hard to find availability for flights on other partners.

Call the call center at 866-435-9526 if you can’t find a time that works for you to show up.

It’s important to remember that there is a $25 service fee per ticket bought over the phone or in person.

Another reason you should call the contact center is that you can’t see how much a ticket costs in taxes and fees until you have enough miles in your account.

Rules for Redeeming an Award

The Top 17 Ways to Use Your LATAM Pass Miles [2024]

If you use points to get an award ticket, that ticket is good for one year from the date it was issued.

When you use points, you can buy either one-way or round-trip tickets. It’s also okay to have your lips open, as long as it stays open the whole time. Here are the places where you can get a prize for open jaws:

Caribbean — Punta Cana, Cancun, Aruba, and Havana

Canada, Mexico, and the United States are in North America.

South America I: Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay

Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru are in South America II.

South America III: Venezuela, Ecuador, and Colombia

If you buy your award ticket less than 90 to 120 days before the trip, there is a redemption fee of $1 per segment, per passenger:

For trips within Argentina that happen within 90 days of the trip, the price is 210 ARS one-way or 420 ARS round-trip.

For trips within Brazil that happen within 90 days of the trip, the price is R$17 one-way or R$34 round-trip.

It costs CLP2,700 one-way or CLP5,400 round-trip for trips within Chile that happen within 90 days of the departure date.

For trips within Colombia that happen within 90 days of the trip, the price is COL$13,400 one-way or COL$26,800 round-trip.

For trips within Ecuador that happen within 90 days of the departure date, it costs $3 one-way or $6 round-trip.

In the 120 days before the trip, it costs $9 one-way or $18 round-trip for trips between South American countries or between South America and the Caribbean.

For all other foreign flights that leave within 120 days, it costs $21 one-way or $42 round-trip.

Making changes or getting a refund is only possible before your flight, as long as your miles haven’t ended and the ticket hasn’t been used at all. If not, you won’t be able to make changes or get a return.

How to Get More LATAM Pass Miles

At the moment, LATAM Pass does not work with any U.S. transferable cash. It won’t be as simple to earn a lot of miles as it is with United MileagePlus or Delta SkyMiles, but it is still possible.

When it comes to transfers, Marriott Bonvoy is the best partner. It works with LATAM Pass three times out of four. You’ll also get an extra 5,000 LATAM miles for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you move to LATAM Pass.

The Top 17 Ways to Use Your LATAM Pass Miles [2024]

In other words, if you switch 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to LATAM Pass miles, you’ll get 25,000 LATAM Pass miles instead of 20,000.

We’ve gone over the basics of LATAM Pass and the best ways to earn miles. Now it’s time for the fun part: using your miles!

Here are some of our best and coolest ways to use your LATAM Pass miles.

1. Fly Delta One One-Way Between the U.S. and South America (72,000 Miles)

Unfortunately, there aren’t many places where LATAM Pass miles are a great deal compared to other reward programs. Luckily, this is one of them!

SkyMiles from Delta costs at least 120,000 miles one-way for SkyTeam trips to South America, while LATAM Pass only costs 72,000 miles.

When it comes to price, Delta is the best company to go with because LATAM flights are so expensive (think 250,000 miles one-way).

Delta’s business class is great, with lie-flat seats, the latest technology, and high-end amenities. The 767 aircraft are used for most trips.

You can redeem these items in the following ways:

  • Atlanta (ATL) – Buenos Aires (EZE) one-way in Delta One business class for 72,000 LATAM Pass miles

LATAM used to be a part of the Oneworld Union, which means that you can use your LATAM Pass miles on Qantas. Even though it’s hard to get into business class on Qantas, it’s so worth it!

Final Thoughts

It’s a bit of a mystery how the LATAM Pass frequent flyer program works, but there are some great deals to be had. Marriott Bonvoy is the only program that lets you move points to LATAM. For every 60,000 points you transfer, you get an extra 5,000 miles.

We don’t think it’s a good idea to transfer your points just for the sake of it, but the program could be useful if you had a special reason to use them. Delta One flights from the U.S. to South America and Africa that don’t stop are our favorites. Other favorites are Qantas, British Airways, and Qatar Airways premium class flights on certain routes around the world. This guide should have helped you learn about the best ways to use your LATAM Pass miles.
